Mechanical Engineer (Alexandria, VA)

Job brief

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, and coordination of mechanical building systems including HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection for a wide range of facility types in the architecture and engineering (A/E) industry. The engineer will develop design solutions from concept through construction, ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead the mechanical engineering design and development of systems, components, and products for assigned projects.
Perform advanced calculations and simulations to validate designs and ensure compliance with applicable codes, guidelines, and standards.
Prepare and review detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design staff.
Coordinate withmultidisciplinaryteamstointegratemechanical solutions with architectural, electrical, controls, and software systems.
Support project managers with scheduling, budgeting, and resource planning for mechanical engineering tasks.
Engage in value engineering and continuous improvement initiatives to optimize designs for performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
Ensure all mechanical engineering activities adhere to company quality standards, safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
Professional Engineer (PE) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Minimum of 8 years of experience in mechanical engineering.
Experience with biocontainment laboratories (BSL-2/BSL-3/ABSL) or other high-containment environments is preferred.
Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, or similar) and engineering analysis tools (FEA, CFD).
Strong understanding of industry codes and standards (ASME, ANSI,ISO,IBC,ASHRAE,CDC/NIHBMBL, NFPA).
